Should I Claim It?

How much does it cost to replace a windshield?

For most cars, between $230 and $550 if you shop. The number you see quoted as the "average" is usually much higher than the number you can actually book, and the gap is the whole point of this page.

What 12 common cars quote right now

These are live prices, not a survey. We pulled them the same way our calculator does: market pricing for the exact vehicle, alongside real quotes from shops that will actually do the job. Same ZIP code for all twelve so the comparison is fair.

Pulled August 17, 2026 for ZIP 43215 (Columbus, Ohio), 2021 model year, windshield only. Prices exclude camera re-aim, which is a separate line and often the biggest variable. Quotes are for the least costly glass that fits at a basic trim level; seals and extra trim pieces can add to it. Prices move, so treat this as a snapshot and use the calculator for a current number in your own ZIP code.

The average is not what you pay

Look at the RAV4 row. The market average is $621. The cheapest shop that will actually fit the glass quoted $340. That is not a rounding error, it is 45% less, and it is the single most useful thing on this page.

It happens because the average includes dealer glass and premium options that most drivers never ask for. The top of these ranges, the $1,938 and the $2,037, is usually a dealer windshield on a vehicle with features built into the glass. If you take the first number a national chain gives you, you are often paying near the top of that range for glass you could have bought near the bottom.

The practical version: get more than one quote. On these twelve vehicles the cheapest bookable quote came in below the market average eleven times out of twelve, by an average of about $137.

The twelfth is worth naming, because it cuts the other way. On the Silverado the cheapest quote we found was $437 against a $390 average, so shopping would not have saved anything that day. That is what real data looks like. If every row in a table like this pointed the same direction, it would be a sales page rather than a measurement.

What makes it cost more

Cost without insurance

Everything above is the cash price, so it is already the answer to "what does this cost without insurance." Nothing about paying cash makes the glass more expensive, and shops quote the same job either way.

What changes with insurance is who pays, and that depends entirely on your deductible. If your deductible is $500 and the job is $340, insurance pays nothing at all, and filing a claim would put a claim on your record for zero money back. That case is more common than people expect, which is why we built the calculator.

So should you use insurance?

It comes down to three numbers: the real local price, your deductible, and whether your insurer raises your rate after a glass claim. Three states waive your deductible for glass entirely, and in those the answer flips. See the state glass laws for whether yours is one, and will a windshield claim raise my rates for the part everyone worries about.

Or skip the reading. The calculator does the arithmetic with live prices for your car and ZIP code, and tells you plainly which way to go.

Where these numbers come from

Market pricing and shop quotes come from the same live sources the calculator uses: a market price band for the exact vehicle by its NAGS glass identifier and ZIP code, plus competing quotes from local shops. Camera re-aim cost is our own estimate, not a shop quote, because neither pricing source returns it. Calibration fitment rates by model year are from an analysis of more than 10,000 windshield lookups reported by glassBYTEs in 2023. If you request quotes through this site, Glass.net pays us a referral fee, and it is the same fee whatever our calculator tells you. Here is exactly how we make money.
